The institution adopted its current name in July, 1991, after having its name changed several times before, being known as Nebraska State Teachers College (1921) and Kearney State College (1963), before being granted with the university status.
UNK's athletic teams are known as the Lopers, who compete in NCAA Division II, RMAC, in various sports, for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are blue and gold and their mascot is Louie the Loper.
